Zapatista Mother Earth, the Tree of Indigenous Autonomy, and Rebel Women Mural ~ March 2018

I. La Madre Tierra (Mother Earth) rooted in the earth bringing the gift of corn
The first Mother Earth encountered in the mural is an elder who carries on her back the gift of corn for her people while her roots flow deeply into the rich brown soil. She is surrounded by, and gives life to, a massive traditional milpa which spans the mural in a luxurious green growth of the three sisters ~ corn, beans, and squash. The elder Mother Earth gazes across the mural, summoning powerful forces of wind, water, and life. As the universal giver of life, she symbolizes the strength, beauty, and creative force of women.
II. Mother Earth directing wind and water to form rivers
Continuing the mural’s theme of powerful women, the second Mother Earth in the mural uses her hands to direct the storm of life in forming a massive river to provide water for plants, animals and people in the mural ~ just as the nearby local river in Chiapas known as Niwan Ja’ (Great River) provides for the Mayan peasant farming families. Her river flows freely across the lands of the mural assuring that the milpa flourishes and that the nine branches of tree of autonomy mature and grow strong.
III. La milpa and the forests of food
The fertile milpa that begins and ends the mural surrounds a massive tree designed to honor the ancient wisdom of biodiversity and balance offered by Mother Earth and embraced everywhere by the indigenous peoples of the Americas. This ancient agricultural system of Mesoamerica called the milpa emerges within – and is fed by massive forests; it is a unique system which utilizes human intelligence to reinvent corn every year through selective breeding, grows innumerable species of beans to provide nitrogen to the soil and proves protein for humans, squash of every color and shape for the people of Mother Earth. In addition to supporting the milpa, the forest feeds hundreds of varieties of nutrient rich greens, pastures, powerful chiles, beautiful flowers, as well as the widest variety of mushrooms and medicines imaginable.
IV. The tree of autonomy surrounded by milpas, rivers, wind, and forests of food.
The massive tree in the center of the mural represents the forest and is re-conceived from a famous Zapatista mural painting in the town of San Miguel Chibtick, municipality of Vicente Guerrero, Caracol of Morelia during 2002; that mural is immortalized in the colorful book entitled “Arte en Rebeldia” (2006) which features detailed texts in three indigenous languages Tseltal, Tzotzil, Tojol-ab’al as well as Castilian Spanish alongside hundreds of photos of early Zapatista mural art. Under the
central slogan of “Never Again a Mexico Without Us”; the massive tree offers life and protection for everyone under its nine branches. Each branch represents a specific element of indigenous autonomy of the Zapatista movement of Chiapas, Mexico. The large leaves at the end of each of the nine branches carry the name of a single theme of autonomy in the indigenous language of Tokol-ab’al. Below the names of the nine branches of indigenous autonomy are reproduced from the mural in Tolo-ja’bal and then translated into English:

V. Creating blank art space for Zapatista students to paint about contemporary indigenous autonomy
At the rear of the school, blank spaces were created as a pedagogical tool for educators and students to explore contemporary manifestations of indigenous autonomy.
Perhaps they will address the same nine themes as their parents, or perhaps they will explore alternative elements of contemporary Zapatista life. VI. Marichuy, Zapatistas and the Council of Indigenous Governace (CIG)
On the far right of the mural, Maria de Jesus Patricio Martinez, popularity known as Marichuy, is guarded and supported by a multi-ethnic group of indigenous women wearing their signature Zapatista masks. Marichuy’s rich dark body is also supported and sustained by powerful roots growing upwards through the moist living soil of Mother Earth, directly into her traditional indigenous dress. Marichuy is an indigenous Mexican woman herbalist whose first l
anguage is Najuatl; following a much debated proposal by the Zapatistas, the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) and the Indigenous Governing Council (CIG) of Mexico chose Marichuy to serve as their spokesperson and presidential candidate during the 2018 national elections. When mural was painted, the indigenous and non-indigenous activists were planning their next steps for the Marichuy campaign.

I. La madre tierra enraizada en la tierra, dándonos el regalo del maíz
El mural comienza con la Madre Tierra, dadora de vida que nos alimenta, mantiene y fortalece, ilustrada como una mujer mayor. Esta mujer nos da un mensaje: las mujeres estan conectadas con la tierra, ya que proveen a todos y todas de vida, amor y fuerza. Ella carga en su espalda el maíz, regalo de la tierra, cuyas fuertes raíces se adentran profundamente en el suelo y llenan de vitalidad a la milpa que la rodea.
Satisfecha con su creación, la madre tierra mira el cielo azul, atestiguando la poderosa unión del agua y del viento.
II. La madre tierra dirige el viento y el agua
Después, se muestra a la madre tierra bendiciendo la vida a través del viento y del agua, elementos vitales para la existencia. Las plantas, los animales y la gente dependen de ellos para sobrevivir.
Con el movimiento suave de su mano, la madre tierra crea el río Niwan Ja’ (Rio Grande), el cual nutre la milpa y la hace florecer, al tiempo que fortalece al árbol de la autonomía; a causa de este regalo, sus creaciones cumplen su propósito en la tierra.
III. La milpa y los productos de la tierra
Las creaciones de la madre tierra se ilustran a lo largo del mural de inicio a fin. De manera consistente, aparecen una variedad de vegetales, los cuales están disponibles para el consumo y disfrute de los seres de la tierra.
La diversidad de los alimentos que proporciona la madre tierra nacen de ella se asemejan a la riqueza de las culturas indígenas.
IV. El árbol de la autonomía
El árbol que aparece en el centro fue retomado del mural zapatista pintado en 2002 en la casa grande del pueblo de San Miguel Chibtick (municipalidad de Vicente Guerrero, Caracol de Morelia) e inmortalizado en el libro del 2006 llamado “Arte en Rebeldia”. Bajo la frase de “Minijun mejiko yuj ja kentlkl” / “Nunca más un México sin nosotros”, el árbol ofrece vida y protección debajo de sus nueve ramas. Cada rama/hoja representa un elemento específico de la autonomía indígena, escrito en lengua Tokol-ab’al, que ahora está siendo recuperado por el Movimiento Zapatista., los cuales son:

V. Marichuy, Zapatistas y el CIG
En el extremo derecho del mural se ve a María de Jesus Patricio Martinez, conocida popularmente como Marichuy, rodeada por compañeras zapatistas, sostenidas por las poderosas raíces que crecen en el suelo enriquecido por el viento, el agua y el cuerpo de la madre tierra.
La fuerza universal de las mujeres es inmortalizada por la madre tierra mientras que hoy está manifestada por el ícono revolucionaria: Marichuy.
Marichuy es una mujer indígena Mexicana que practica la herbolaria y cuya primera lengua es el Náhuatl. Ella fue escogida por el Congreso Nacional Indígena (CNI) y el Consejo Indígena Gobernante (CIG) de México para servir como representante y candidata presidencial durante las elecciones del 2018.
