Jose Saramago
This piece is excerpted from Zapatista by Jose Saramago, the Portuguese writer awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize In Literature. Among his notable works are The Gospel According to Jesus Christ (1991), Blindness (1995), and Seeing (2004). A noted supporter of the Zapatistas, he once said that, “Although I am a communist, when in Mexico, I am a Zapatista.” Saramago passed away in 2010 at the age of 87.
