Dear friends,

By any measure, 2008 has been an amazing year!  Schools for Chiapas wishes to thank and congratulate our supporters for their loyal and dedicated commitment to fundamental change. 

As George Bush?s chickens come home to roost, the world faces hard economic times.  However we hope that even in these hard times you will donate to Chiapas at the level you can afford.

You see, Zapatista education ~ created and guided by the Mayan peoples of Chiapas ~ remains an important model for dignity, democracy, and justice.  Zapatista education is a critical example of the changes needed everywhere.  In many small ways, your continuing donations ~ and the love and support of individuals like yourself all over the world ? helps sustain the enormous changes sweeping Chiapas and the world.

So we begin by thanking you deeply for your generosity and sacrifice on behalf of real change.  Now, continuing the vein of offering thanks, we want to tell the story of Chiapas work in 2008 by thanking a few people who have worked and sacrificed for change this year.

First, we want to thank Elon University professors Tom and Bird - and the Periclean Scholars of Elon University, NC and their families; and at the same moment we offer thanks to Joanne and the wonderful students of Jesuit High School in Sacramento, CA.

This year began with two simultaneous and unprecedented Schools for Chiapas delegations.  The Jesuit High School team funded and participated in a childcare center at the Zapatista Women?s Encounter.  At the same moment in the highlands of Chiapas, the Elon University team participated in the highlands coffee harvest, painted a beautiful schoolhouse mural with Mexican muralist Gustavo Chavez, and finally have produced a video about their experience (see below).  The donations of these students and their families have also stretched far beyond their school mural to support other Mayan schools and education projects.  Your help can make possible public showing of Tesla Melage?s film from Elon called ?Painting Without Permission? at schools, community centers, churches, union halls, or universities.

Next we want to thank Seth, John, Chelsea, Jody, Casey, Chris, Holly and everyone at Earthworks Music and Higher Grounds Coffee for believing that music education is important.  Seth played with traditional and new Mayan musicians while delivering a variety of musical instruments to Zapatista schools.  Earthworks Music continues to sponsor concerts and other fundraisers. You can help by donating for instruments, songbooks, or simply by drinking Schools for Chiapas coffee everyday in your home and workplace.

We want to thank Lola, President Reg, Tom, Nancy, Diccie, Dean, President David, and the thousands of members of the National Education Association (NEA) who have donated for years to build autonomous schools in Chiapas.  The donations of these educators have allowed construction to begin on the Paul Mann Memorial School and Music Center.  At the July 2008 convention of the NEA a documentary about this Zapatista school was presented while the Peace and Justice Caucus and especially the Iowa Education Association worked hard to raise funds.  You can help by viewing the inspirational NEA video from our web site and joining these U.S. educators in purchasing a student desk, funding school supplies for a Mayan school, or joining a school-building delegation in Chiapas, Mexico.

We want to thank the Bronner family, especially Ralph, Trudy, David, Michael and the entire team of Dr. Bronner?s Magic Soaps for using their 60th anniversary to open new possibility for ecological organic agriculture in Chiapas.  Ever since Uncle Ralph took a ride on the Little Yellow School Bus for Peace in Chiapas and replaced the worn out tires, everyone at Bronner?s has supported autonomous education in Chiapas.  In this anniversary year they have increased their support to a new level by sponsoring a series of workshops for Zapatista Mayan beekeepers that are transitioning to organic practices with hopes of opening new markets for their bee products.  Your help is needed for ecological agricultural education in Chiapas to sponsor additional rural workshops, promote fairer trade marketing of Mayan products, and PERHAPS to come yourself on an agricultural focused trip in Chiapas, Mexico.

We also thank Hansel, Noriko, Gebremedhine, Barry, Basilius, David, Kagwi Ndirangu , Jeff, Kepha, Olga, Musungu, Njeri, Jessica, Jala'ngo and the hundreds of African, American, European, and Asian growers who planted and harvested GMO-free Zapatista corn this year.  In the face of the growing worldwide food crisis, the Zapatistas have created a living seed bank to fight hunger and educate about the need for sane, organic, local agriculture.  Yet there is so much more to be done and the autonomous schools of Chiapas work everyday to educate the next generation and their families.  Your help is needed to construct new nurseries, build rural education centers, purchase GMO testing kits, and plant more GMO-free Zapatista corn next year.

We want to thank Margarita, Jennifer, Ramon, Rosemary, Michael, Guada, Anna, Lordes, Adriana and especially the many Zapatista women and men who have built and maintain ?The Market of the Other?.  Schools for Chiapas launched our virtual store on International Women?s Day, March 8, 2008.  This online Mayan market continues to grow and features a unique selection of weaving, jewelry, clothing, music, foods, and beautiful arts items directly from the Mayan peoples of Chiapas.  Your support as donations, loans, and purchases is urgently needed to increase inventory from autonomous communities, improve our web-based online store, and promote shopping at www.schoolsforchiapas.org.

And of course, no list of thanks would be complete without special mention of Lee, Cathy, Amy, and others at the Larson Legacy who - despite the current economic hard times ? are doing so much for the Mayan peoples? of Chiapas.  Please join them by donating for musical instruments, sports equipment, and much needed cash to continue school construction in the Mayan communities of Chiapas.

Finally, and most importantly, we want to thank the many whose names and faces are neither named nor seen.

Tens of thousands of Zapatistas have invited, hosted, tolerated, and taught us about change over the last 15 years.  The Mayan education promoters and the families of Zapatista students with whom we have laughed and cried are our inspiration.  To the promoters of health, agro ecology, the community production cooperatives, the autonomous authorities, and all the members of the Zapatista movement; we now give back to these indigenous people the many thanks that they have asked us to take to you ? to all those who have sent donations from far away. So now this anthem of thanks is around to where it all begins and ends. 

In closing, we want to once again thank each of you.  You are the key to changing the world and saving this planet.  We are all key to the change that has happened and to the changes that are to come.  Please continue with us on this exciting journey of building freedom-loving schools in the misty mountains and steamy jungles of the Mexican southeast ? your support for popular education in this small corner of the world provides an example for better worlds everywhere.

¡ De toda forma, 2008 ha sido un año extraordinario ! Schools for Chiapas quisiera agradecer a sus partidarios y felicitarles por su leal y atento compromiso para un cambio fundamental.
Mientras los pollos de George Bush vuelven a casa para posarse, el mundo está suffriendo duros tiempos económicos. Sin embargo, esperamos que donaraís  a Chiapas al nivél que podéis a pesar de esos dificiles tiempos.

Como podéis verlo, la educación zapatista, creada y conducida por el pueblo maya de Chiapas, permanece un modelo importante de dignidad, democracia y justicia. La educación zapatsita es un ejemplo de los cambios necesitados por todas partes. De muchas formas diversas, vuestras donaciones regulares y el apoyo y la amistad que recibimos de todas partes del mundo ayuda a mantener los esfuerzos para los enormes cambios agitando Chiapas y el resto del mundo.

Por eso empezamos con agradeceros profundamente por vuestros sacrificios y generosidad para un verdadero cambio. A continuación, queremos daros noticias de Chiapas en 2008 agradeciendo a algunas personas que han trabajado y hecho sacrificios este año.

Primero, agradecemos a los profesores de Elon University, Tom y Bird, y a los Periclean Scholars de Elon University, NC y a sus familias ; agradecemos con ellos a Joanne y a los maravillosos estudiantes de la Jesuit High School de Sacramento, CA.

Este año empezó con dos delegaciones de Schools for Chiapas simultaneas y si precedents. El equipo de la Jesuit High School proveó de dinero y participó en la creación de un centro para niños al Encuentro de la Mujeres Zapatistas. Al mismo momento, en las alturas de Chiapas, el equipo de Elon University participó en la cosecha de café, pintó un hermoso mural escolar con el muralista Gustavo Chavez y producío una video sobre su experiencia (ver abajo). Las donaciones de esos estudiantes y de sus familias también han extendido el apoyo a otras estrúcturas como escuelas mayas y otros proyectos educativos. Vuestro ayudo puede permitir la difusión pública dela película de Tesla Melage de Elon University llamada « Painting Without Permission » (Pintura sin permiso) en las escuelas, las casas de comunidades, las iglesias, los ayuntamientos y las universidades.

A continuación, agradecemos a Seth, John, Chelsea, Jody, Casey, Chris, Holly y a toda la gente del Earthworks Music and Higher Grounds Coffee por haber creído en la importancia de la educación musical. Seth ha tocado con músicos mayas nuevos y tradicionales proveyendo también varios instrumentos a las escuelas zapatistas. Sin embargo, queda mucho que hacer y las escuelas autónomas de Chiapas trabajan cada día a educar la nueva generación y sus familias. Vuestra ayuda está necesaria para construír guarderías, centros educativos rurales, coprar kits de contról OGM y sembrar más maíz sin OGM el año próximo.

Este mercado maya on line sigue creciendo y presenta una selección única de tejidos, joyas, ropa, música, comida y bonitos obras de arte proveniendo directamente del pueblo maya de Chiapas. Vuestros donaciones, préstamos o compras están necesitados urgentemente para aumentar el inventario de las comunidades autónomas, para mejorar nuestra tienda on line y promover las compras en www.schoolsforchiapas.org.

Y claro, esta lista de agradecimientos no sería completa sin mencionar a Lee, Cathy, Amy y a los otros de Larson Legacy que, a pesar de esos duros tiempos económicos, hacen tanto para el pueblo maya de Chiapas. Diez miles de zapatistas nos han invitados, alojados, tolerados y enseñado como cambiar las cosas desde hace quince años. Los mayas, promotores de la educación, y las familias de los estudiantes zapatistas con las que hemos reído y llorado están nuestra inspiración. A nuestra vez, agradecemos a los promotores de la salud y de la agro-ecología, a las cooperativas productivas comunales, a las autoridades autónomas y a todos los miembros del movimento zapatista qoe nos han pedido os agradecíamos a vosotros que enviáis donaciones de todas parte del mundo. Ahora este himno de agradecimientos circula desde el inicio hasta el final.

Para concluír, queremos agradecer cada uno de vosotros otra vez. Estáis la llave para cambiar el mundo y salvar el planeta. Todos estamos la llave para los cambios que ya tuvieron lugar y para los que vienen. Por favor, continuad con nosotros este viaje hacia la construcción de escuelas pro-libertad en las brumosas montañas y selvas del sureste mexicano, vuestro apoyo para la educación popular en este rinconcito del mundo es un ejemplo para mejorar otras partes del mundo.

Los tiempos están duros pero una sola moneda signífica tanto aquí en Chiapas. Prometemos cuidar cada céntimo que donaréis. ¡ Sólo vosotros podéis realizar este cambio, con una poca ayuda de vuestro amigos ! Por favor, donad hoy para ayudar construír un mundo nuevo y mejor.
