Dear friends,

Despite increasing political repression and unprecedented natural disasters, the autonomous Mayan communities of Chiapas have made 2007 a year for amazing advances in education and social programs.  And once again Schools for Chiapas has accompanied the Zapatista communities through good times and bad. 

In response to the many positive advances in Chiapas, we have scheduled new school constructions; exciting trips; educational workshops; expanded nursery tree plantings; and a special focus on women?s health education.  Finally, Schools for Chiapas will open our new internet store on Jan. 1, 2008!

It is clear that this level of activity will only be possible with lots of help from our friends!

Certainly we remain astounded at how far even the most modest contributions are stretched by the Zapatistas.  The land for schools, health clinics, and agro-ecology centers are donated by the communities; likewise all labor for construction, and much of the construction material, is donated.  Promoters, such as the inspiring women who are now receiving special training in reproductive health, work as volunteers and do not receive a salary.  Finally in the case of natural disasters, such as the current landslides and floods; or in the case of intentional destruction, as occured Chol de Tumbala (and too, too many other Mayan communities); indigenous people simply gather the little they have and then carry sacks of corn and beans ON THEIR BACKS to those in need!

Please let us add your ?grain of sand? to the important work in Chiapas.  Your donation will be deeply appreciated and extraordinarily effective.  If you can afford to donate or pledge $100 or more, we?ll be glad to send you a Schools for Chiapas poster, a bilingual Zapatista songbook, or a pound of our new Zapatista coffee!

During 2007 the Zapatista communities held two large international meetings in Chiapas.  During these gatherings, or Encounters, community members presented the first detailed public descriptions of Zapatista education, health, and governance programs.  (Audio transcripts are available at www.ezln.org.mx).  This process of public disclosure will continue at the first Zapatista Women Encounter to be held during the last days of 2007.  At this gathering women from throughout Chiapas will describe their lives and their roles in the ongoing social changes shaping indigenous life.  Schools for Chiapas has agreed to coordinate an innovative childcare center during the Dec. 2007 Women?s Encounter ? as of this writing volunteers are still needed.  Sign-up as a childcare volunteer online today!  www.schoolsforchiapas.org/tripsandtours

Of course this childcare delegation is not the only exciting travel opportunity planned for 2008! 

January 1, 2008 will find volunteers painting and placing the final touches on several elementary school classrooms in Chiapas.  At the end of January 2008, Mayan musicians will swap songs with visitors on a musicians? tour.  Later in the year, Schools for Chiapas delegations will construct schools, plant trees, study indigenous autonomy, work in health care centers, and visit several of the ancient Mayan cities of Chiapas.  During 2007, four universities and two high schools participated in specially organized tours.  These ?specialty tours?, which can be tailored to meet the specific interests of your group, have become quite popular and we welcome inquiries from anyone who might be planning a Chiapas trip.  The possibilities are endless... We need a minimum of 5 people to schedule a ?special tour?.  The Travel Forum on our web page allows anyone to announce and recruit additional participants for their special tour. Ecological education is a growing and vital part of Zapatista schools; in fact, most autonomous, Mayan zones in Chiapas now have formal programs of ecological agriculture which are strongly supported by Schools for Chiapas.  The largest such program is known as ?Mother Seeds in Resistance? and has now established living seed banks of Mayan corn on every continent of the planet.  In Feb. 2007 at the World Social Forum in Kenya, dozens of African farmers from many countries received seed donated by Zapatista farmers and distributed by Schools for Chiapas.  Posted on our web site you can see photos of these new African volunteers, along with many others who are growing of Zapatista corn worldwide.

Once again we will be glad to send you organically grown, non-GMO corn seed donated by Zapatista farmers for solidarity growing; this seed will be available at our online store on Jan. 1, 2008.
 
Education for health is a high priority in Chiapas and Schools for Chiapas is now supporting the training of women?s health promoters.  Our first donation, thanks to the Larson Legacy, helped complete construction on a central training facility.  Now a team of volunteer indigenous women health promoters (in consultation with a gynecologist) spend the first week of each month planning a new, one week training course in reproductive health.  Then the Zapatista health promoters present the course to community-based health promoters ~ first in the central training facility and twice in other indigenous communities ~ bringing new ideas and skill sets to women who are healers in their communities but are too isolated by both geography and language to access other more conventional training opportunities.

Your support can provide funds for transportation and food during this three year health education program.  (We estimate that only $30 per month allows one indigenous woman to participate!)

Today Zapatista schools come in all sizes and colors. Everyday Zapatista schools welcome students in seven languages (Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Chol, Mam, Toljolabal, Zoque, and Spanish): Zapatista schools exist in highlands coffee fields, next to raging jungle rivers, and in the middle of towns and villages.  Zapatista education promoters often meet students in borrowed homes and sometime under the trees or in their school gardens.  Everywhere autonomous, indigenous education is respectful of students? language, promotes indigenous dignity, and teaches democratic values.  Within the ocean of need which is indigenous Chiapas, the Zapatistas continue to create miraculous schools for their own children and models of freedom-loving education for kids everywhere.  By acting today you help make this possible!

pps.  This year the Zapatistas established two new fruit tree nurseries with help from Schools for Chiapas.  Both of the new nurseries created in 2007 are specialized in the medicinal Neem tree; plans are underway to open many additional fruit tree and reforestation nurseries in 2008.  Frankly we?re not sure what to think about the ?carbon offset? craze sweeping the internet and financial markets ~ but we are sure these tree nurseries in Chiapas are VERY GOOD for the planet and we estimate that a $25 donation will allow us to plant at least ten tropical trees in Chiapas.

Zapatista Schools Advance
As 2007 ends there are finally more Zapatista education promoters than there are autonomous, indigenous schools ~ this human miracle must now be matched with a renewed burst of school constructions! 

For over a decade autonomous Mayan communities in Chiapas have assigned the very best and brightest of their young men and women to be trained as ?barefoot teachers? aka ?education promoters?.   These vocations are without salary and involve require great sacrifice from those who are chosen.  Some could not face the hardship involved; but many have survived their early ?tests by fire? and are successfully teaching children ? albeit often in homes or under trees.

These inspiring educational volunteers deserve our support. It?s time for everyone who has generously donated over the years to step forward once again; it?s also the perfect time for new supporters to lend a hand in building new schools and training centers throughout Chiapas.  Your dollars will help to construct a new world.

Chiapas Travel Programs
Increased experience and diversity is deepening the educational impact and professionalism of every Schools for Chiapas delegation. 

For example, The Nonconformist Cultural Center for Youth delegation will provide childcare for the first Zapatista Women?s Encounter from 12/27/07 until 1/2/08.  Shortly afterwards in February 2008, we?ll sponsor our first musician-to-musician tour. Later in 2008 delegations will help build Zapatista schools and health care centers; experience ancient Mayan cities; help harvest corn, coffee and cacao; plant reforestation and fruit trees ~ one delegation will even process herbal medicines!

Education for Health
Women?s reproductive health training, natural medicinal gardens, and emergency health response top Schools for Chiapas plans for 2008 health education project.
At the request of Zapatista health authorities, Schools for Chiapas is again seeking funds for Commandanta Ramona?s Emergency Medical Fund.  These monies provide transportation and health testing for families facing grave medical emergencies in the highlands of Chiapas. 
Schools for Chiapas is also cooperating in the creation and maintenance of several herbal medicinal gardens in addition to a statewide effort to introduce Neem trees at schools and health centers. 
Finally, in conjunction with the statewide autonomous Mayan health organization, OSIMECH, Schools for Chiapas is seeking your help to fund an innovative training program for health promoters specializing in reproductive medicine.  Join us!
Volunteer opportunity:  Help plant Neem trees and herbal medicines under the direction of Mayan health and ecological agriculture promoters; collect organic seed for this project.

Encuentro de Mujeres Zapatistas

El tercer Encuentro entre las Mujeres Zapatistas y las Personas del Todo el Mundo programado para el 27 de Diciembre del 2007 hasta el 2 de Enero del 2008. Esta reunion internacinal sera dirigida por mujeres indigenas, y estara focalizado enteramente en temas de mujeres indigenas: seguramente sera interesante y profundo. Las mujeres indigenas Mayas del sudeste Mexicano bondadosamente nos permitieron participar en este fantastico encuentro al proveer cuidado de niños. Nuestra esperanza es que el Centro Cultural de Niños no Conformista permitira alas mujeres indigenas de Chiapas hacer mejor su importante trabajo. Participantes en el CCI-Jovenes tambien podran participar en el Encuentro de Mujeres.

Adelanto de las Escuelas Zapatistas
A medida que termina el año 2007 hay finalmente mas promotores de la educacion Zapatistas que escuelas indigenas y autonomas ~ Este milagro humano debe ser ahora comparado con nuestra renovada explocion de construccion de escuelas!

Por mas de una decada las comunidades Mayas autonomas en Chiapas han asignado a sus mejores y brillantes jovenes para ser entrenados como "maestros descalzos" tambien conocidos como "promotores de la educacion". Estas ocupaciones estan sin salarios e implican requerimientos de gran sacrificio de aquellos que han sido elegidos. Algunos no han podido afrontar el gran trabajo que implica; pero muchos han sobrevivido a sus primeras "pruebas de fuego" y estan enseñando exitosamente a los niños - aunque a veces es en casas o debajo de arboles.

Estos inspiradores voluntarios educativos merecen nuestro apoyo. Es tiempo de que cada uno que generosamente ha donado durante estos años de que haga un paso mas; es tambien el momento perfecto para nuevos donantes que ofrescan una mano en la construccion de nuevas escuelas y centro de entrenamientos de todo Chiapas. Sus dolares ayudaran a construir un nuevo mundo.

Queridos Amigos

A pesar del incremento en la política de represión y los desastres naturales sin precedentes, las comunidades autónomas Mayas de Chiapas han hecho del 2007 un año de asombrosos avances en educación y programas sociales. Y otra vez más Escuelas para Chiapas ha acompañado a las comunidades Zapatistas a través de los buenos y malos tiempos.

En respuesta a las muchos avances positivos en Chiapas, hemos programado construir nuevas escuelas; viajes excitantes; seminarios educativos; expansión de los viveros de plantación de árboles; y un especial interés en la educación sobre la salud de la mujer. Finalmente, Escuelas para Chiapas abrirá su primera tienda en la Internet el 1 de enero del 2008.

Esta claro que este nivel de actividad solo podría ser posible gracias a la mucha ayuda que recibimos de parte de nuestros amigos.

Ciertamente continuamos asombrados cuan lejos inclusive las mas modestas contribuciones son alcanzadas por los Zapatistas. La tierra para las escuelas, clínicas de salud y centros agro-ecológicos son donados por las comunidades; de igual modo todo el trabajo de construcción y mucho del material de construcción, es donado. Promotores, como las inspiradoras mujeres que están ahora recibiendo especial entrenamiento en salud reproductiva, trabajan como voluntarias y no reciben salario. El 1 de enero del 2008 buscaremos voluntarios para pintar y colocar los toques finales en varias aulas de escuelas primarias en Chiapas. La educación ecológica es una creciente y vital parte de las escuelas Zapatistas; de hecho, la mayoría de las zonas autónomas en Chiapas tienen ahora programas formales de agricultura los cuales están fuertemente apoyados por Escuelas para Chiapas. El programa mas grande es conocido como ?Semillas Madres en Resistencia? y a ha establecido bancos de semillas vivas de maíz Mayas en todos los continentes del planeta. En Febrero del 2007 en el Foro Social Mundial en Kenya, docenas de granjeros Africanos provenientes de muchos países han recibido donaciones de semillas de los granjeros Zapatistas y distribuidas por Escuelas para Chiapas. Educación para la salud es una alta prioridad en Chiapas y Escuelas para Chiapas esta ahora apoyando el entrenamiento de mujeres promotoras de la salud. Nuestra primera donación, gracias al Legado Larson, ayudo a completar la construcción de un edificio central de entrenamiento. Ahora un equipo de voluntarios promotores indígenas de salud de la mujer (en consulta con un ginecólogo) pasan la primera semana de cada mes planeando un nuevo curso de entrenamiento de una semana en salud reproductiva. Luego los promotores de salud Zapatistas presentan el curso a los promotores de salud basados en la comunidad ~ primero en el edificio central de entrenamiento y por segunda vez  en las otras comunidades indígenas ~ llevando nuevas ideas y habilidades preparadas para mujeres que son sanadoras en sus comunidades pero que están muy aisladas por ambas, la geografía y el lenguaje, como para acceder otras oportunidades de entrenamiento mas convencionales.

Hoy las escuelas Zapatistas vienen en todos lo tamaños y colores. Todos los días las escuelas Zapatistas recibe alumnos en 7 lenguajes (Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Chol, Mam, Toljolabal, Zoque, y español): las escuelas Zapatistas existen en altos campos de café, al lado de furiosos ríos selváticos, y en el medio de pueblo y villas. Los promotores Zapatistas de educación a veces se reúnen con estudiantes en casas prestadas y a veces debajo de los árboles o el patio de sus escuelas. En todos lados la educación indígena y autónoma es respetuosa del lenguaje del estudiante, promueve la dignidad indígena, y enseña los valores democráticos. En el medio del océano de necesidades que son los indígenas de Chiapas, los Zapatistas continúan creando escuelas milagrosas para sus propios niños y modelan una educación de libertad y amor para los chicos en cualquier lugar. ¡Al actuar hoy usted puede ayudar a hacer esto posible!

Nuestra tienda online abrirá el 1 de enero del 2008, igualmente usted no tiene que esperar hasta ese momento para comprar el realmente buen café de Chiapas. PD1: este año los Zapatistas han establecido dos nuevos viveros de árboles frutales con la ayuda de Escuelas para Chiapas. Ambos nuevos viveros creados en el 2007 están especializados en el árbol medicinal Neem; esta planeado abrir muchos adicionales de árboles frutales y viveros de reforestación en el 2008. Francamente no estamos seguros de que pensar acerca los ?bonos de carbono? de arrolladora moda y mercados financieros ~ pero estamos seguros de que estos viveros de árboles en Chiapas son MUY BUENOS para el planeta y estimamos que una donación de $25 nos permitirá plantar al menos 10 árboles tropicales en Chiapas.

Introduction: Students return to beautifully painted school
Yesterday (Feb. 4, 2008) as Mayan students across the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico returned to class, one group of kids enjoyed a newly painted school building.  Their new school mural prominently features local hero Commandanta Ramona, probably the most famous indigenous Zapatista.  In addition, images of Emiliano Zapata, Che, and the earth are joined by a progression of corn growing paintings.

During celebrations on the anniversary of the death of Ramona and during the painting of this school, the local parish priest commented, ?Like in Bethlehem, a star was born here in these mountains that lights the way to a new world and brings people from afar.  Commandante Ramona is a new star guiding us all toward a world of justice, democracy, and dignity.? SERAZ refers to the Zapatista Autonomous Rebellious Education System.

Local community members, Zapatista education promoters and students, Elon University and Schools for Chiapas Coordinators students joined Mexican Muralist Gustavo Chavez to paint the mural.

Introducción: Los estudiantes vuelven a una hermosa y pintada escuela

Ayer (4 de febrero del 2008) cuando los estudiantes Mayas de las tierras altas de Chiapas, México volvía a clases, un grupo de chicos disfruto un edificio escolar recientemente pintado. Su nuevo mural escolar muestra prominentemente a la heroína local Comandanta Ramona, probablemente la indígena Zapatista más famosa. Además, imágenes de Emiliano Zapata, el Che y de la tierra son juntadas en una progresión de pinturas de maíz creciendo.

Durante las celebraciones del aniversario de la muerte de Ramona y durante el pintado de su escuela, el sacerdote de la parroquia local comento, "Como en Bethlehem, una estrella nació aquí en estas montañas que iluminan el camino a un nuevo mundo y acercan a las personas alejadas. La Comandanta Ramona es una nueva estrella que nos guía hacia un mundo de justicia, democracia y dignidad"  SERAZ significa Sistema de Educación Rebelde Autónomo y Zapatista.

When: Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs.; April 7, 8, 9, & 10; 2008. Optional trip to Palenque, Fri. & Sat. April 11, 12.

Who:  Foundation staff and program officers, individuals of wealth, independent philanthropists, donors.
   
What: Face-to-face exchanges with the Mayan men, women, and children living in the autonomous, indigenous communities of Chiapas who have forever changed the face of social change in Latin America and the world.
 
Where: The unique and colorful Mayan highlands of Chiapas; (with optional side trip to the ancient city known as Palenque).  This additional trip requires two additional days and will cost an additional $250.)  The tour will begin in the beautiful, colonial tourist city of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.  The nearest airport to San Cristobal is Tuxtla Gutiérrez (TGZ) which is the capital of Chiapas. If you elect to participate in the side trip to Palenque, you should book your return trip through the city of Villa Hermosa, Tabasco, Mexico.

Cost:  The all inclusive cost for the 4 night Zapatista Funders? Tour is $750; cost for the two night Palenque trip is $250.  Lodging will be a small, beautifully maintained hotel, in the colorful, colonial city of San Cristobal de las Casas.  (An optional overnight stay in a Zapatista ?CARACOL? is also available.) Daily transportation to the indigenous communities will be in safe and comfortable vehicles with an experienced driver and a translator / guide.  The program fee and ground package includes two meals a day, a full-time guide, translation, printed and emailed education materials, orientations, four nights of hotel accommodations, and ground transportation within Chiapas.  (NOTE: Air fares and airport transfers are NOT included in this price, but are simple to arrange with your own travel agent or Schools for Chiapas is glad help you make these arrangements.)
