Peace and Justice Caucus of the National Education Association?

It's done! No falta un 2. donde dice Chol de "Tumbala Survives Another Year"
Bye and sorry for the delay, i'm kind of busy with my exams...

#67. New Year?s 2008 ~ Zapatista Women's Encounter- Children?s Nonconformist Cultural Center
When:
Thursday, December 28th to Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008. Registration deadline for this trip is Nov. 18, 2007.
What:
?Schools for Chiapas? has accepted responsibility to organize an innovative childcare center for the Zapatista Women?s Encounter to be held in Chaipas during the last days of 2007. This childcare center will function with a staff of indigenous Zapatistas from throughout Chiapas as well as Mexican and international volunteers from everywhere on Planet Earth.
?El Centro Cutural Inconforme? (The Non-conformist Cultural Center) (named for the tale told by the Sup at the last Encuentro) will provide entertaining and educational activities in art, music, sports, dance, and theater for Zapatista children during the ?Encuentro of Commandante Ramona and the Zapatista Women? (details below). We are looking for people (men mostly, but women too) who can run this center, offer performances, or provide ?Outside the box? ideas for children?s activities. While the working focus of the caravan will be to run the ?Non-conformist Cultural Center?, our plan is for participants to work approximately 6 hours a day leaving everyone with some time to hear the presentations of the Zapatista women and other activities of the Zapatista Women?s Encuentro.
Who:
People with many skills are needed including artists and actors, cooks and clowns, professors and puppeteers, musicians and magicians, priests and poets, doctors and dads, as well as non-conformists of every strip.
Where:
In the Zapatista Caracol III of La Garrucha, Chiapas, Mexico. We will meet participants in the major tourist city of San Cristobal de Las Casas on Thursday evening, Dec. 28, 2007. The nearest airport to San Cristobal de las Casas is Tuxtla Gutiérrez and participants should arrange their transportation to Chiapas at the earliest possible date.
Why:
The third encounter between the Zapatistas and the peoples of the world will focus specifically on women?s issues within the indigenous communities of Chiapas, Mexico. Zapatista women from throughout Chiapas will share their experiences, their ideas and their hopes and dreams.
Men have been invited to attend, but according to the initial call for the event, men should ?listen very silently or can stay home and take care of the kids.? Taking this advise to heart (below and to the left), Schools for Chiapas will support the women's gathering by providing childcare for women who are participating in the Third Encounter of Zapatista Peoples with the Peoples of the World: Commandanta Ramona and Zapatista Women. We think this is going to be REALLY fun as well as helpful.
Costs:
This will be a working holiday and we are forming a delegation of volunteers who will provide direct service to the Zapatista women. Each volunteer participant will be expected to donate funds for food, translation support, education materials, orientations, rustic housing, ground transportation within Chiapas ? air fares and airport transfers are NOT included in this price. In addition these delegation fees will help purchase food, arts materials, sports equipment, and food for kids and indigenous volunteers at The Unconforming Cultural Center )Volunteers on this delegation will gain a unique chance to engage in a meaningful way and be of service. Join us!
The basic cost for this working delegation is one week of the minimum wage of the country where you work. For example, participants from the US (with a $240/wk minimum wage) will contribute $240 and participants from Mexico (with a $N440 pesos minimum wage) will donate $N440 pesos. In an attempt to make our delegations accessible to more participates, all Schools for Chiapas delegation fees are based on the minimum wage of your country and therefore costs vary depending on where participants live and work. Any funds donated by participants and not used to create and operate the Unconforming Cultural Center will be used to support indigenous Zapatista women?s organizations in Chiapas.
Click here to hear the original announcement of the women?s encounter made by the Zapatista leader Everilda in July of 2007.

1. Ramona?s Emergency Medical Fund ~ El fundo de Ramona
This fund, named after the much loved Comandanta Ramona who died in 2006, helps pay for emergency procedures and travel for indigenous patients throughout the highlands of Chiapas. Last year an Italian organization donated an ambulance for emergency medical transportation; Ramon?s Fund helps pay for gas as well as tests and food while in the city.
2. Neem: The People?s Pharmacy ~ Nim: El farmacia del pueblo
The first year of work in Zapatista communities has demonstrated that Neem trees adapt well to several climate zones in Chiapas. This summer two new Neem tree nurseries were constructed and planting to test additional climate zones were begun in new areas. In addiion, the first experimental plantations of Neem trees for long-term production have been established and these plantations will be greatly expanded in the next few months.

Paramilitary threats escalate ~ Amenazas de paramilitares
The dogs of war are once again being unleashed in Chiapas, Mexico and their masters seem oblivious to the conflagration that could result.
Paramilitary forces ? especially the revitalized group known as OPDIC - are organizing, threatening, and occasionally violently assaulting Zapatistas in the Mexican southeast. Regular military and police forces as well have attacked and destroyed several isolated and impoverished Mayan communities. The late Andres Aubry published an excellent article explaining the political strategy behind these attacks ? click here for an English translation of excellent this text. Several autonomous governments have published denouncements of specific agressions all of which are available in Spanish at
www.ezln.org.mx
. Neither earthquake damage nor much publicized paramilitary threats were able to stop the autonomous, indigenous authorities of San Andres Sacamch?en de los Pobres from inaugurating their new market on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007. Over 2000 supporters joined the festivities with food and music proving once again that the Zapatista struggle will go on despite attempts to halt its progress.
However it was just ten years ago that a similar process resulted in the horrific massacre at Acteal and tens of thousands of internal refugees; Schools for Chiapas urges people of conscience everywhere to join us in speaking out against this madness.

I'm sending you a translation for Fall07 Newsletter ~ Childcare at Zapatista Women's Meeting @ 168 words article. I hope it'll be useful to you (Sorry, I haven't found the link to send it by the web site). Greetings.
