Delegation 1s: Fall 2010 and 2011 specialty tour programs ~ design your own Zapatista experience!
When: Dates for special trips to Chiapas are currently available in Sept., Nov., and Dec. 2010; plus Feb., March, May, and June of 2011. Participants determine the specific dates for these trips. You should allow a minimum of two months planning (four months is better) to ensure an excellent and well-organized specialty tour! However you might find on shorter notice a trip that has already planned that you could join. Click here to email us regarding a Speciality tour application.
Who: Student groups, women and faith-based organizations, activist collectives, artists’ co-ops, others. Minimum number of participants is 3; maximum is 22. Contact us in case you are an individual who might be willing to join others in a speciality tour already in the planning stages. Click here to email us regarding a Speciality tour application.
What: Unique three-day to three-month immersion experiences in autonomous, Mayan commuities and civilian centers with emphasis on dignity, democracy, and justice. Groups explore the social, cultural, educational, health, and/or agricultural aspects of the Zapatista movement and the autonomous, indigenous communities. Academic or direct working experiences can be included. Side trips can be arranged to ancient Mayan cities, rain and cloud forests, tropical rivers, and beautiful colonial cities of Chiapas, Mexico. No special language skills required. Click here to begin application.
Where: Trips can vary from the cool and misty cloud forests of the highlands to the steamy jungles of the jungle region of the Mexican southeast. Click here to email us regarding a Speciality tour application.
Cost: In an attempt to make our delegations accessible to more participates, your fees vary depending on where you live and work. The basic cost for a weeklong, rustic “camping-style” trip is two weeks of the minimum wage. (For example, USA participants now pay $600 for a weeklong, ground package that includes food, full-time guide, translation support, education materials, orientations, housing, transportation within Chiapas – air fare and airport transfers are NOT included.) Tours based in comfortable city hotels with daily transportation to the countryside are somewhat more expensive.Click here to begin application.
Why: Your group will decide the focus and goals of the trip in conjunction with Schools for Chiapas personnel; however, our overall goal is to help birth a world guided by dignity, democracy, and justice ~ a world where everyone is respected and honored.
