Mural features Zapata, Che, Ramona, corn and the world!
This week, as Mayan students across the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico returned to class, one group of kids enjoyed a newly painted school building. Their new school mural prominently features local hero Comandanta Ramona, probably the most famous indigenous Zapatista. In addition, images of Emiliano Zapata, Che, and the earth are joined by a progression of corn growing paintings.

Comandanta Ramona compared to the Christmas star
During celebrations on the anniversary of the death of Comandanta Ramona and during the painting of this school, the local parish priest commented, "Like in Bethlehem, a star was born here in these mountains that lights the way to a new world and brings people (like those painting the elementary school) from afar. Comandante Ramona is a new star guiding us all toward a world of justice, democracy, and dignity."

"SERAZ" refers to the Zapatista Autonomous Rebellious Education System.
