You Can Offer Sanctuary to Zapatista Corn!
Sow the seeds of resistance and join the growing movement against transgenic contamination of Mayan corn in Chiapas, Mexico!
By planting Zapatista corn, you become a part of a global effort to preserve a vital genetic heritage that has evolved over thousands of years. You can plant these powerful Zapatista corn seeds in your community, farm, home, school, or family gardens. As a decorative plant it grows well in large pots or small plots. We urge you to invite your friends and family to collectively prepare the soil, to come together to plant the Zapatista seed, and perhaps you all can organize a larger sanctuary harvest party in the fall to eat great corn while celebrating the Mayan peoples of the Mexican southeast and the Zapatista struggle for another world where all worlds fit!
These seeds have been donated by Zapatista farmers who hope and pray that people of conscience around the world will provide respectful sanctuary for this living part of their cultural heritage. Despite massive importation from the USA of corn carrying genetic modifications, the autonomous Mayan communities in Chiapas are dedicated to keeping their corn pure and natural.
Because of the significance of this seed to today’s living Mayan cultures, individuals wishing to grow this Mayan corn will be asked to sign a pledge to never allow this corn to be used for commercial purposes.

Order Your Zapatista Corn Seed - Today!
Each package contains approximately 60 powerful seeds donated by Zapatista farmers – germination rates are very high and detailed growing instructions are printed on each seed package. You’ll need about 180 square feet of rich land per package of seed.
All corn provided by Mother Seeds in Resistance from the Lands of Chiapas is free. However a suggested donation of at least $7 is requested of each grower (more is welcome!) to cover postage and to purchase GMO field testing kits ($6.50 each) to continue Zapatista efforts to make Chiapas, Mexico a GE Free Zone.
For the 2006 growing season this is yellow, white, purple, and pinto corn from the misty and mountainous homelands of the Mayan peoples of Chiapas. To obtain your Zapatista seed packages, please send an email to schoolsforchiapas@schoolsforchiapas indicating your shipping address, how many seed packages you will grow, what color(s) of seed you want, and what donation you have mailed, pledged, or made online. Your Zapatista corn seed will be in the mail within ten days!

Ramona Sends Off Subcommander Marcos - January 2006
Two days ago the Tzotiles buried Commandanta Ramona.
Along with a few outsiders and many indigenous Zapatistas, I had the opportunity and the honor to attend the burial and contemplate the human issues that always arise when one is confronted with the finality and continuality of death. Throughout that sunny morning and brilliant afternoon, a tumult of emotions and thoughts and impressions flashed across my consciousness and are still percolating beneath the surface. Although I am still sorting out my feeling, I need to share some impressions from that profound experience.
How to begin? How can I explain the impact of Ramona? Why did this tiny Tzotzil woman make a difference in my life; why did she make a difference in the world; why did I sit on that hillside near the graveyard of San Andres Sacamch’en de los Pobres all day during her funeral? What does the future hold for men and women like Ramona who want to save our planet from the many horrors of our times?
Certainly a part of Ramona’s impact and legacy lives in the form of images.
Of course there’s the 1996 image of tiny Ramona on the verge of death leaning on the arm of the Sub Commandante Marcos as she leaves the Zapatista capital of La Realidad -breaking the deadly military siege of the Zapatistas and traveling on to conquer the...

Mother Seeds Delegation Application Deadline is Feb. 3, 2006
Sunday, Feb. 18 to Saturday, Feb. 24, 2006
This Mother Seeds Delegation will be based in a Zapatista civilian center located in a rainforest jungle setting with a beautiful river for daily swimming and many howler monkeys which will sing you to sleep every night. Participants will travel to the northern rainforest region of Chiapas for a unique, hands-on experience helping establish an educational ecological-agriculture center serving all the autonomous, indigenous communities of Chiapas. Participants will work to create organic fertilizer, plant trees and seeds, visit a women’s artisan cooperative, meet Zapatista government authorities, and sleep in a Zapatista education center (hammocks and light blankets are recommended for this camping-style trip). Optional side trips are available to the nearby world famous, ancient Mayan cities of Palenque, Bonampac, and Yachilan.
Friday, Feb. 3, 2006 is the deadline for full payment and completed online applications. The delegation will meet in the city of Palenque at 5pm on Sunday evening, Feb. 18, 2006 (many more details will be sent after you complete your application!) Flights are inexpensive at this time of year, but should book immediately flights immediately into the airport located in Villahermosa (buses leave frequently for Palenque from Villahermosa). Another option is to only fly as far as Mexico City and then take a bus all the way to Palenque (about 12 hours – but cheaper than a flight!)
