Neem: The Pharmacy of the People Arrives in Chiapas, Mexico!
After months of preparation and planning the autonomous, indigenous promoters of ecological agriculture are planting nurseries of Neem trees in several Zapatista zones of Chiapas, Mexico. (See one of the first planting in the photo above.) Eventually these beautiful trees will surround autonomous schools, health centers, and other Mayan centers.
Neem has been used for thousands of years in India to promote dental health and to treat many diseases such as Malaria, high cholesterol, gastritis, and fevers. In addition, this tree offers excellent shade and is effective against over 200 plagues that affect tropical agriculture. Finally, the fast growing Neem tree is useful in reforestation and provides excellent firewood and a strong, beautiful lumber.

L a Realidad. Chiapas.

The Underdogs: Three Years of the Good Government Boards
La Realidad, Chiapas.
On August 9, unnoticed by the press, but in zapatista territory the work of the good government juntas was celebrated, but not with dances or ceremonies. They were created in 2003 in order to consolidate a process which got underway in December of 1994 with the creation of 38 autonomous and rebel municipalities.
The red alert that was agreed upon more than three months ago in solidarity with the 27 prisoners of San Salvador Atenco and of the Other Campaign did not bring the autonomías to a standstill, although it did put off contacts with the outside and some of the towns' projects, their way of endorsing their support of those whom they consider to be their compañeros.
The "Madre de los caracoles del mar in nuestros sueños" caracol, better known as the caracol of La Realidad, remains closed, with large banners on the main doors, on which can be read "Closed for red alert". Here, no contacts or visits are possible. The junta is not here, but it emerged that the turnover of positions . . .

Zapatista School Stolen in Acteal, Chiapas
This photo of the sign in front of the autonomous school in Acteal, Polho, Chiapas was taken in July 2006. However in August 2006, just before the children of Acteal were ready to return to school, the autonomous school and a number of other buildings behind this sign were occupied by members of the PRI party. The school sign itself is gone; and as of today, the Mayan children of Acteal have no where to attend school.
Schools for Chiapas is horrified at this act of violence against this important autonomous, indigenous education institution. We urge the occupiers to leave peacefully and allow the children of Acteal to return to their community school.
This emergency email is a little different than our normal newsletters and we apologize for not including more "upbeat" features. However it seemed important to let everyone know about some of the problems facing indigenous children and adults in Chiapas and to appeal for your support in this moment of crisis.
We'll have an email out soon with news of new school constructions and updates on the situation in Chiapas.
