Make a gift of "GMO Field Testing Kits" and help save Mayan corn

Red, yellow purple ears of corn on display.Your donations to purchase GMO field testing kits will allow Zapatista small farming families a rough gauge of GMO contaminations in their fields and milpas.

This contribution to purchase GMO field testing units also makes you a vital part of a massive social movement to protect the Mayan heritage genetic heritage of GMO-free corn.

In the southeastern Mexican state of Chiapas, the people are resisting the spread of GMO's by only planting corn seed from known sources, educating their communities about the dangers of GMO's, planting hertage seeds in an international grow-out program, and field testing for GMO contaminations.

Mayan kids study GMO's.Educating about GMO corn contaminations in Chiapas, Mexico
(ver en español)
A massive popular educational program is at the center of the long-term Zapatista resistance to genetically modified crops.  This educational program has slowed the spread of GMO's by encouraging small farmers to carefully guard seed sources and save heritage corn varieties.

In addition, the autonomous Mayan communities have established GMO-free  sanctuaries and solidarity grow-outs for their unique corn.  (Please see "Planting Seeds of Dignity" to learn more about how to provide a seed sanctuary in your own community.)

At a time when even Monsanto-funded research is concluding that the cultivation of GMO crops has lead to the emergence of new strains of herbicide resistent weeds (see article at sidebar), the Mexican government has recently authorized the "experimental" planting of GMO crops.

In 2010, the Zapatista promoters of ecological agriculture will once again use simple "Field Testing Kits" to identify GMO contaminations.  These simple tests provide a rough gauge of GMO contamination while serving as a compelling educational tool in the rural Mayan communities of Chiapas, Mexico.

Cacao is a beautiful rain forest tree which is native to Chiapas and grown by many small Zapatista farming families.  The seeds of this tree are the basis for all chocolate and during the winter holidays the seeds are fermented and ground to make wonderful hot chocolate drinks.

Each package contains about 25 seeds for only $5.00.  These seeds are a natural source of caffeine. Don't eat too many all at once or you'll get a big buzz while puckering up your mouth - yummy and healthy too!
