As a part if it’s ongoing support for Ecological Education and cultural revival in Zapatista communities, Schools for Chiapas is currently sponsoring workshops on caring for native stingless bees and for constructing these Melipona hive boxes for use by Mayan community members. We also seek contact with individuals and communities who are knowledgeable in the Mayan tradition and modern means of caring for this important American pollinator. See article below:

Easter week - or Semana Santa as its called in Mexico - is a time of sweet celebration and profound hope throughout the indigenous communities of Chiapas. This year some Zapatistas are working to sweeten the lives of their communities by re-couping the ancient Mayan tradition of cultivating hives of the stingless, native bees of Chiapas.

“This year I am going to put several stingless bee hives into boxes so that we can reproduce the hives - because most of the big trees where they live have been cut down.” explained a middle-aged Chol indigenous bee keeper who is a long time member of the Zapatista movement. As he carefully harvested the bags of Melipona honey from his hives he added . . .

Como parte del apoyo constante a la Educación Ecológica en las comunidades Zapatistas del sureste Mexicano, “Escuelas para Chiapas” esta organizado talleres para enseñar el cuidado de las abejas sin guijón y para construir cajas-colmenas Melipona para que las utilizen los miembros de las comunidades Maya. Tambien buscamos contacto con individuos y comunidades con conocimiento de tradiciones Mayas y modos modernos de como cuidar este polinizador Americano tan importante.

La Semana Santa es un tiempo de celebración dulce y esperanza profunda en las comunidades indígenas de Chiapas. Este año algunos Zapatistas están trabajando para endulzar las vidas de sus comunidades por medio de rescatar la antigua tradición Maya de cultivar colmenas de abejas sin aguijón que son nativas a Chiapas.



“Este año voy a poner varias colmenas de abejas sin aguijón en cajas para poder reproducir las colmenas, porque la mayoria de los árboles grandes donde vivian han sido cortados.” Explicó un apicultor indígena Chol de mediana edad, que ha sido parte del movimiento Zapatista desde hace mucho tiempo. Mientras cosechaba cuidadosamente las bolsas de miel Melipona de sus colmenas, el agrego . . ."
