All about Schools for Chiapas!

The organization of Schools for Chiapas is made up of men and women who voluntarily join together to make the world a better place. We are young and old; rich and poor; we speak a variety of languages; we come in a variety of skin tones; we are of a multitude of sexual orientations; and we live on a number of continents. Some of us have spiritual and religious practices; many of us are involved in community, workplace, union, student, cultural, environmental, and peace activism.

In summation our organization attempts to be diverse, inclusive, and activist.

We also attempt to live our lives and carry out our work in the spirit of dignity, democracy and justice. This web page is our attempt to invite you to join us in the exciting work of searching for a world where all the worlds fit. Bienvenidos!

Mission statement: This is a short but dense summary of our dreams and objectives. Your feedback is useful because we are a growing and changing organization. Organizational history: Learn a little about the work of Schools for Chiapas since our founding in 1996 which was based on work carried out years before by “Corrientes Mexicanas / Mexican Currents” and “Grass Roots Events, Inc.” Our fiscal sponsor is Grass Roots Events, Inc. which is a 501 (c)3 federally tax exempt corporation based in California, USA.

Organizational history:  Schools for Chiapas is neither a traditional NGO (non-governmental organization), nor are we affiliated with any government. Schools for Chiapas was created the mid-1990’s by individuals searching for ways to make the world a better place.

Participants’ pages: Schools for Chiapas includes many wonderful and creative individuals. You can meet a few of these great people by clicking this link.

Monthly donors: Building a new world is expensive. It costs lots in terms of creativity, hope is costly, and dignity almost priceless. Then there is the question, and the reality, of money.

Newsletters:  Schools for Chiapas sends out an email newsletter about once a month and publishes a printed Newsletter about twice a years.  Subscribe here.

Offices / snail mail: The best way to contact Schools for Chiapas is always via the internet at info@schoolsforchiapas.org. (Click here to contact Schools for Chiapas via internet.) Our principal office is located in the Zapatista caracol of Oventic (click here for information about the caracoles). This office is located at Domicilio Conocido, Caracol II, Oventic San Andres Sacamch’en de los Pobres, Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. We also regularly are available one or more of the other four caracoles which are now spread throughout Chiapas. These autonomous indigenous centers have email access, but lack mail or phone services. Therefore, we also maintain a small (non-public) working space at 1631 Dale Street, San Diego, CA 92102 where we can receive national or international snail mail.
