Exploring Zapatista Autonomy

Schools, health, ecological agriculture, and women’s empowerment are all vitally important to the Zapatista communities of Chiapas, Mexico – and for years, Schools for Chiapas has worked closely with these Mayan communities providing a broad range of educational resources.

As one impressive Mayan activist once explained to a small Schools for Chiapas delegation, “We must all cooperate in order to heal the hole in the ozone layer and heal the holes in the hearts of men and women everywhere.”

In this section of our web page, Schools for Chiapas, examines our practical and educational efforts to support the autonomous, Mayan communities of Chiapas.  In fact, Schools for Chiapas invites you to join us in studying and supporting Zapatista education in these four broad areas of work:

  1. Schools of Hope
  2. Women’s Empowerment
  3. Sustainable Agriculture
  4. Community-based Education for Health
